In a flat or circular independent needle machine a resilient member provided below the stitch cam is deformed by the needles as they pass below said cam so that the butts are forced into contact with the cam. In one embodiment the ends of the needles deform a spring, or synthetic elastic member encircling the needle cylinder. A similar arrangement may be provided on a needle dial. In a further embodiment a rubber wheel, or flat spring bridges a gap in a landing cam below the stitch cam.
