PURPOSE:To make it possible to ensure long-term reliability with respect to fatique destruction based on the shearing strain of an optical fiber, by taking up an optical fiber to be tested while the take-up position of said optical fiber is vibrated in accordance with the reciprocal movement of a vibrator. CONSTITUTION:Belt type capstans 1, 2 are rotated to the direction shown by an arrow B by a drive source to take up an optical fiber 30 to be tested from the side of the capstan 1 to the side of the capstan 2 and have function blocking the elongation of the optical fiber 30 in the longitudinal direction thereof and the twist thereof in the circumferential direction thereof. A vibrator 5 is made movable between support frames 10, 10 by the actions of a reversible motor 13 and limit switches 14, 15 and the moving speed of the vibrator 5 moving between the support frames 10, 10 is determined by the preset rotational speed of the reversible motor 13. Therefore, by selecting the delivery speed of the optical fiber and the moving speed thereof to the lateral direction to proper values, arbitrary shearing stress and an arbitrary lasting time can be set and, therefore, a twist test in accordance with the use state of the optical fiber can be performed.
