The invention relates to a universal expander for the spreading of tubular fabric, the width of which expander is adjustable over the entire range of use of a textile machine, both when it is stopped and when it is in operation. It comprises two branches 6 and 7 and rollers which engage into the feeders 1 to 4 under the effect of the attractive forces ft exerted on the plates 25 by means of a magnetic field generated by the magnets 50 or electromagnets 52. The two branches are connected to one another by means of a mechanical member consisting of a plurality of parallelograms, to prevent the branches 6, 7 from pivoting on themselves. The invention is characterised in that the branches of the expander are not pushed inwards by a mechanical member of limited capacity, but are attracted outwards through the fabric by means of a powerful magnetic field. The universal expander is used at the entrance or at the exit of machines for processing tubular fabric, wherever it is necessary to spread and control the width of the fabric. <IMAGE>
