PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polyester suitable as a material for electrical parts, etc., suppressing discoloration of resin and generation of corrosive gas, by copolymerizing a specific halogen-containing aromatic diol to terephthalic acid and an alkylene glycol and subjecting the copolymer to solid-phase polycondensation. CONSTITUTION:The objective polyester can be produced by compounding (A) terephthalic acid (ester) and (B) an alkylene glycol (or its ester-forming derivative) (e.g. ethylene glycol) with (C) a halogen-containing aromatic diol of formula (R and R' are alkylene; X is halogen; m and an are 1-4; p and q are 1-10) at an amount to give a copolymerized polyester having a halogen content of 2-15wt%, carrying out the polymerization to an extent not to cause esterification or discoloration until the intrinsic viscosity reaches <=1.0 and subjecting the polymer to polycondensation in solid phase at a temperature lower than its melting point by 5-50 deg.C or less in high vacuum.
