PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a phase-transfer catalyst, epoxy resin curing catalyst, etc., in high yield, by reacting a triorganophosphine with an alkyl chloride in the presence of water in the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:A triorganophosphine (e.g. triethyl phosphine, tributyl phosphine, etc.) is made to react with an alkyl chloride (e.g. methyl chloride, butyl chloride, etc.) in the presence of preferably 5-50wt% water (based on triorganophosphine). The reaction is carried out usually at 20-200 deg.C for 1-24hr.
