Containers are transferred to and from a road vehicle by means of a transfer mechanism working substantially within the confines of the load supporting surface of the vehicle. The transfer mechanism comprises a trolley 10 guided by rollers 26, 27 within a guideway 9 at a level below that of the upper surface 40 thereof, which surface acts as the load supporting surface. Adjacent each end of the trolley are apertures 25 releasably engageable by couplings 48 each comprising a double-ended arm 54 pivotally mounted and biased by springs 57 into two trolley engaging positions each appropriate to the direction of movement of the trolley. The coupling is automatically disengaged from the trolley on appropriate reversal of the trolley. A disc 53 mounted on said coupling 48 releasably engages in an aperture 64 in the corner mountings 66 of the container. The trolley is coupled by a cable 12a, 12b to a motor M whereby to reciprocate the trolley transverse of the vehicle to effect a stepwise movement of the container. Jacks (46), (47), (Fig. 2, not shown), may be used to level the vehicle with the surface from or to which the container is to be transferred. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 18 (not shown) the trolley (72) is mounted for movement in guideways (74), which guideways are movable, by hydraulic rams (94), in the direction of movement of the trolley to bridge any gap between the vehicle and the surface to or from which the container is to be transferred. The guideways (74) are guided by slots (91) therein in engagement with T-pieces (88) affixed to the transverse member (71) of the vehicle.</p> |
