PURPOSE:To prevent roll breakage, etc. and to economize fuel cost by heating the front end and rear end of materials to be rolled just before a continuous rolling mill then subjecting the materials to continuous rolling. CONSTITUTION:An induction heating furnace 1 is provided near the inlet of the continuous rolling mill. A material front end detector 3 and a surface thermometer 4 are disposed thereto. The required heating lengths l1, l2 are preliminarily heated at the front end and rear end of the material 5 to be rolled and a power source of the furnace 1 is turned on to heat the front end of the length l1 when the front end of the material 5 is detected by the detector 3 just before the furnace 1. A power source for heating is turned on to heat the required length l2 at the rear end upon lapse of the prescribed after the detection of the front end, then the material is subjected to the continuous rolling. Since the respective parts of the material 5 are heated to the same temp. and then the material is rolled and therefore, the peak rolling load is decreased and the roll breakage by impact, etc. are prevented. Since the heating quantity as a whole is decreased, the fuel consumption is economized.
