In a process for separating sheets, for example paper or plastic sheets, stationery envelopes or the like, by lifting them individually from a sheet stack by means of suction force acting on the free side, the sheet stack is repeatedly lifted, corresponding to the lifted amount, such that the respective topmost sheet is located within a suction region during the lifting operation, where it is acted on with suction force and subsequently lifted. So that the sheets are separated considerably more reliably, between the lifting operations, the sheet stack (22) is held closely below the suction region and, for a lifting operation, is in each case lifted from this position to such an extent that the topmost sheet (23) is located within the suction region and the sheet stack (22) is immediately lowered again below the suction region after that sheet (23) is acted on by suction force.
