The position of a rod-shaped object in the tobacco industry is determined by measuring the time period between the transmission and the reception of sound waves reflected from the object. In one exemplary embodiment, a device for determining the height of piles is described, having a transmitter (22) for ultrasonic pulses (over 20 kHz), a receiver (24) and a circuit (10) for measuring the time period. In the circuit (10), a blocking switch can be provided which produces regular pulses of the length of the determined time period. <IMAGE>
