PURPOSE:To enhance coal liquefying capacity by suppressing the growth of a particle size at the time of baking, by introducing a powder containing metal iron or iron oxide and gas containing hydrogen sulfide into a fluidized baking furnace an baking both of them at 250-1,000 deg.C to form an iron sulfide catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A powder containing metal iron or iron oxide and gas conataining hydrogen sulfide are introduced into a fluidized baking furnace and baking reaction is performed at 250-1,000 deg.C to obtain a coal liquefying catalyst. Metal iron is one with a valency of 0 of a reduced state and iron oxide is FeO, Fe2O3 or Fe3O4 and the particle size thereof is pref. 100mum or less and more pref. 10mum or less. Gas containing hydrogen sulfide is that containing 1% or more of hydrogen sulfide and, as coexisting gas, hydrogen, nitrogen or inert gas is pref. but the presence of gas such as oxygen or chlorine is not pref. The baking temp. is more pref. 300-600 deg.C.
