The invention has the object of replacing the relays contained in every model railway locomotive originally intended for alternating current operation by a single centralised travel-direction switching device which is attached between alternating current transformer and rail system, and furthermore thus permitting the direction of travel of all model railway locomotives of any current system (DC, AC) and rail system (two-conductor rail system, three-conductor rail system) to be changed. The object is achieved in that a centralised travel-direction switching device is provided between power supply (transformer) and power drain (rails), the input current of which switching device is alternating current and the output current of which is direct current, the said switching device containing a switch-over relay and it being possible to use the said switching device to change in a centralised fashion the operating direction of all the current loads (predominantly model railway locomotives). In order to permit mixed operation between alternating current operation and direct current operation, the centralised travel-direction switching device is equipped with a selection switch which optionally switches the output current of the centralised travel-direction switching device in such a way that the output current of the centralised travel-direction switching device is optionally direct current or alternating current so that the change in operating direction of the current load (predominantly model railway locomotives)... both in a centralised fashion for all current loads (with direct current) and optionally individually for each...
