The antiroll device is an assembly which, connected to a trailer, is intended to prevent a dangerous building up of oscillations (rolling) beyond a certain movement, in which the trailer is automatically braked independently of the tractor vehicle. The construction and the mode of action are as follows: A sensor measures the movement of the trailer and detects that certain limits are exceeded and that there is a risk of the trailer swerving and possibly overturning. This finding is relayed to a brake device, which then brakes one or more trailer axles either continuously for a brief period or at intervals. Such advance braking of the trailer inevitably straightens the entire vehicle-trailer combination, gently slows it down and makes braking of the tractor vehicle unnecessary in such an emergency situation, which generally results in the trailer suddenly overtaking the tractor vehicle, since the brake pulse from the front generally does not occur precisely at that instant when the trailer and tractor vehicle form a straight line. The antiroll device is an outstanding contribution to the safer driving of caravans, boat trailers and commercial trailers, which do not always get into difficulties only due to driving mistakes on the part of the vehicle driver, but can also be influenced by weather influences, for example wind or the very strong suction effect, particularly in overtaking manoeuvres involving trucks.
