The process consists of (a) filtering the sludge in a self-cleaning filter to remove large suspended solid particles; (b) treating the filtrate with strong inorganic acid, e.g. H2SO4, in sufficient quantity to give pH 2-2.5; (c) decanting by gravity into a lower part consisting of flocks and sludge and an upper aq. part contg. 0.5% olive oil; (d) pumping the latter to a neutraliser; (e) addn. of NaOH to give pH 7-7.5; and (f) injection into the cycle as process water.
