PURPOSE:To output a field interpolation control signal and to prevent a picture quality from being deteriorated according to the malfunction of an interpolation signal by using a field memory during an input of a signal of a constant ordinary field period and using no field memory when the field period is not constant. CONSTITUTION:When an ordinary video signal is inputted, it is A/D converted 1 to store in the field memory 2 and a 1H memory as a signal before one field and before one line and processed together withe the present signal in an interpolation signal processing circuit 9 to form the interpolation signal 10. In the case of the signal the field period of which is not constant as the input signal, the signal is applied to a synchronization separating circuit 13 to separate the synchronization and a synchronizing signal is supplied to a field period control circuit 14. In such a circuit 14, a specific reproducing mode of the input signal is detected and the circuit 9 is controlled by the detected signal. At this time, the circuit 9 forms the interpolation signal 10 without using the field memory 2 to prevent the deterioration in the picture quality due to the malfunction of the interpolation signal 10.
