During production of single-crystal semiconductor rods from multi-crystal semiconductor rods, the semiconductor rod is inductively heated by means of a HF heating coil (2), so that a melting zone (7) is formed in the semiconductor rod. A constant magnetic field is set up in addition at the electrically conductive melting zone (7) and forms the pole shoes (4) of a constant field magnet (3) which is made of ferromagnetic material. To ensure that the high frequency alternating field which is generated in the pole shoes (4) by the HF heating coil (2) is unable to cause a high degree of eddy current loss, the said pole shoes (4) are coated with a layer (5) of a highly electrically conductive material. <IMAGE>
