In a spring element in which two parts displaceable towards one another against the force of a spring can be locked by a brake device in any position relative to one another, which brake device has brake jaws (1, 7) with surfaces which face one another and are parallel to the displacement direction, these surfaces are provided with fine fluting extending transversely to the displacement direction and having complementary profiles (41, 42 and 43, 44 resp.). The fineness of the profiles guarantees not only virtually infinite adjustability of the spring element and trouble-free displacement of the parts when the brake device is released but also adequate positive locking in order to be able to absorb very high forces. A preferred profile for the fluting consists in annular grooves (41) with a roughly semicircular cross-section on the one brake jaw (1) and annular projections (43) with a likewise roughly semicircular cross-section on the other brake jaw (7). <IMAGE>
