In an exercise apparatus, consisting of a cylindrical rolling member (1) of rigid material which can be driven by the person exercising (3) by a rolling movement of the member in the downward-rolling direction and can be rolled over a bearing surface (2) such as a wall or the floor, strengthening of the muscles of the back, especially in the region of the spinal column of the person exercising, is achieved in that the rolling member (1) has a recess (5) running continuously around it at its periphery and, on both sides of the peripheral recess (5), a bearing surface (6, 6') running in each case continuously around the rolling member (1) for the person exercising (3). <IMAGE>
