The buffer cap which can be placed with a single action onto trailer couplings on motor vehicles and is intended for coupling knobs is essentially composed of a buffer body (1) which is connected to a holding part (2). The slot cutout (3'), which is provided on the tubular piece (3) of the holding part, is open at the edge and has a variable slot width ensures that the buffer cap sits firmly and in an operationally correct manner on trailer couplings even with coupling necks (9) of different thicknesses. The buffer cap also automatically adapts itself to coupling necks (9) of different lengths and can be secured in a simple manner against theft by simply hooking a padlock into a hole (3'') on the holding part (2). <IMAGE>
