The centrifugal compressor comprises a barrel-type casing (1), arranged on whose longitudinal axis there are an axial intake port (2), which is connected on one side to an intake chamber (3) and on the other side to an impeller (4) overhung on a shaft and connected to a discharge chamber (7), and a diffuser (5) which serves to generate a working-medium stream and is formed by a supporting element and blades (16) evenly arranged on the perimeter thereof. The cavity of the casing (1) is isolated against the environment by a cover (9) fastened to the casing (1). The blades (16) are fixed to the diffuser's (5) supporting element which is located in a cavity (19) bounded by the inner face of the cover (9) and the surface of a partition (8) attached to the cover (9), and is provided with a means for displacing it on the longitudinal axis of the centrifugal compressor. The blades (16) are located in an axially symmetric annular duct (17) which is bounded by the wall of the intake port (2) and the partition (8) against a continuous annular gap situated opposite the blades (16) of the diffuser (5).
