PURPOSE:To considerably decrease recording and reproducing defects by removing a magnetic layer in the part corresponding to the end to be formed by cutting and removing the removed foreign matter from a base film in the stage of cutting the base film while running the same. CONSTITUTION:The end which does not contribute to recording and reproduction is melted after cutting of a thin magnetic metallic film layer 1 by the laser light which is generated by a laser generator 16 and is irradiated from a gun 17 before a recording medium 11 enters cutting blades 13, 14. The laser light is divided to meet the number of cutting and is transmitted by optical fibers, etc. The melted metal is sucked by a suction nozzle 19 and is discharged by a discharge fan 21 to the outside of the machine. The recording medium 11 from which the thin magnetic metallic film layer 1 in the prescribed position is removed by melting is cut only of the base film 2 and coating layer by the cutting blades 13, 14. The cutting without generating cracks at all in the thin magnetic metallic film layer at the end is thus made possible.
