A control system for a motor vehicle provided with a continuously variable transmission (4) using a belt drive (7, 8,11) system. The transmission has a line pressure control valve (40), and a ratio control valve (50), to control the oil supplied to the cylinder (9,10) of one of the pulleys (7,8) to change the transmission ratio. When the throttle valve of an engine is opened rapidly, the line pressure is increased so as to prevent the belt (11) from slipping.
