PURPOSE:To determine the inversion and non-inversion of a smectic liquid crystal according to the polarization of a ferroelectric material by forming a floating electrode and ferroelectric material so as to exist in series to said liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A ferroelectric liquid crystal 1 having a large visual angle is used as the liquid crystal material. A thin ferroelectric film 2 and floating electrode 6 are formed on one (for example, 3) of light transmissive electrodes to constitute a capacitor in said part. One 5 of the orientation treatment layer of the liquid crystal is, therefore, made the side of the floating electrode 6 where the liquid crystal 1 exists. Ec to be substantially determined by the electric charge accumulated in the floating electrode 6 provided between the liquid crystal and the thin ferroelectric film 2 is variably controlled even if there is no substantial Ec in the liquid crystal. Then the liquid crystal follows up the charge Q subordinatively and eventually the liquid crystal has the large apparent Ec.
