发明名称 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT WITH PLASTIC SUBSTRATE
摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain superior display quality having a high contrast ratio while no interference color is detected with the naked eye over a wide visual angle range by setting the refractive index of a substrate and the thickness of a liquid crystal layer in specific relation. CONSTITUTION:Liquid crystal 35 is charged between the 1st substrate 11 and the 2nd substrate 21 made of plastic films which are drawn uniaxially and transmit light, polarizers 17 and 27 are arranged on nonfacing surface sides of the substrates, and the angle between the direction of main optical axes of both substrates in which the refractive index is largest and the axes of transmission of the polarizers is set to <=+ or -2.5 deg.. Then, (nx-ny)d>=0.7 holds for the refractive index of the substrates and the thickness (d) (mum) of the liquid crystal layer, where nx is the refractive index in the direction of the main optical axes, ny is the refractive index in a direction crossing the main optical axes in substrate planes, and (d) is the liquid crystal layer thickness (mum). Consequently, the liquid crystal is prevented from coloring and the display quality is improved.
