In order, for example, to cover a slit trench (35), the set of elements has an essentially flat head element (1) with a square outline, and a plurality of side elements (2, 2') in the form of plates. The side elements (2, 2') can be connected to the head elements (1) by means of detachable pins, like hinges, so that they can individually be fitted in an open position, for example a firing position, and a closed position, for example a protection position. The head element (1) and the side elements (2, 2') consist of armoured steel. This set of elements allows a protection device to be erected over slit trenches in a simple manner using only three men, which protection device offers protection against rifle bullets and shell fragments. <IMAGE>
