PURPOSE:To eliminate undue fuel consumption as a mechanical loss, and stabilize the engine rotation, by maintaining the lift characteristic of suction and exhaust valves at a minimum position when an auxiliary machinery is operated under the engine idling condition. CONSTITUTION:A valve lift variable mechanism 20 is provided to vary the lift characteristic with a stepwise change of a lift control cam 8 in association with a rotation of a cam control shaft 11. The cam control shaft 11 is rotated by a driving means 21 according to a control signal to be generated from a control means 25 according to a deviation between a target position to be set by a setting means 23 according to an engine operational condition and an actual position to be detected by a position detecting means 24. When the engine idling condition is determined by a determining means 27 upon closing a switch means 26 for operating an auxiliary machinery, an engine speed is increased by a correcting means 28, and the cam control shaft 11 is retained by a retaining means 29 at a position where the lift characteristic becomes the minimum.
