PURPOSE:To produce partially hydrophilized silica gel having inside surface of pores which has been made hydrophobic and external surface which has been made hydrophilic by allowing an organic compd. having a specified group and an org. group which can be made hydrophilic to react with silica gel having hydrophobic groups on the inside surface of pores and silanol groups on the external surface. CONSTITUTION:A compd. contg. a bonding group reactive with silanol group, and a hydrophilic or hydrolyzable org. group is allowed to react with powdery silica gel having many pores (b) with the whole surface (d) being made hydrophobic with alkyl groups such as octadecyl silyl group as hydrophobic group (e) and external surface (d) contg. silanol groups. Partially hydrophilized silica gel having hydrophilic groups (f) such as OH group, COOH groups, etc., on the surface zone (d), leaving hydrophobic groups (e) contg. alkyl group such as propyl, octyl, etc., on the inside surface of the pores is obtd. by transforming the org. groups to hydrophilic groups or by treating the silica gel with oxygen plasma.
