PURPOSE:To manufacture a low-oxygen Cu-Nb or Cu-V alloy for superconducting material excellent in workability by allowing Al and Ti to exist in a molten metal containing Cu and Nb or V in a vessel made of electromelted calcia. CONSTITUTION:The vessel in which at least internal surface is composed of electromelted calcia is used, and an alloy containing Cu and Nb or V is melted in vacuum or under a nonoxidizing atmosphere of Ar, etc., in said vessel. Al and/or Ti is added to the above molten alloy to undergo refining. The composition of the refined alloy is regulated so that it consists of 10-60wt% Nb or V, 0.01-0.5wt% Al and Ti, <=250ppm O, 10-500ppm Ca, and the balance essentially Cu. An alloy for superconducting material refined by above-mentioned process has high cleanliness and is excellent in workability.
