PURPOSE:To connect various disk drives and further increase the number of disk drives without modifying a programs by reading disk characteristic information and parameter information and rewriting catalog information in the program. CONSTITUTION:A disk controller 2 consists of a parameter controller 2-2 and a disk controller 2-1. Then, the disk controller 2-1 operates by the instruction of a data readout signal from a host system 3 and further a data write signal based on the disk parameter information stored in the parameter controller 2-2 to access a disk drive 1. The disk characteristic information and parameter information which are stored in fixed format on the track '0' and cylinder '0' of the disk drive previously are read out and set at the time of initialization and the catalog information in an OS program is also rewritten. Consequently, various disk drives are connected and also increase in number without modifying programs of the OS.
