PURPOSE:To obtain a foam in high efficiency, suitable for thermal insulating materials, cushioning materials, etc., by treatment with a liquid halogenated hydrocarbon of a specific copolymer prepared from, as essential raw materials, isobutylene-contg. hydrocarbon mixture and maleic acid (anhydride). CONSTITUTION:(A) A hydrocarbon mixture containing isobutylene, consisting mainly of 4C hydrocarbon or 4C and 3C hydrocarbons (e.g. butane-butylene fraction derived from naphtha cracking) and (B) maleic acid (anhydride) or (C) maleic acid (anhydride), styrene and/or acrylic ester are brought to copolymerization using a solvent soluble for the resulting copolymer (e.g. acetone). The resulting reaction product is treated with a liquid halogenated hydrocarbon (e.g. methyl chloride, methylene chloride), thus obtaining the objective foam.
