PURPOSE:To prevent at ink ribbon from being caught, by moving a carriage and moving the ink ribbon in a circulative manner while stopping a printing head, thereby applying a tension on the ribbon. CONSTITUTION:A controlling circuit 14 checks whether or not a color region of an ink ribbon set in position coincides with a color region designated by a host system. When the color region of the ink ribbon does not coincide with the designated color region, the circuit 14 calculates the amount by which the ribbon is to be shifted in the width direction for bringing the designated color region into contact with a printing head, sets an amount by which a carriage is to be moved, judges the direction in which the carriage is to be moved, and sets the moving direction. A shifting motor is started, a carriage motor is started, and it is judged whether or not the ink ribbon and the carriage have moved respective predetermined distances. Thus, when shifting the ribbon in the width direction, the circuit 14 controls a carriage motor driving circuit 18 to move the carriage. As a result, the ink ribbon is circulatively moved as the carriage is moved, whereby a tension in the moving direction of the ribbon is exerted on the ribbon, so that the ink ribbon is not caught when being shifted in the width direction.
