PURPOSE:To count the quantity of bodies to be measured speedily by making a sequential scan on a light image from the objects which is picked up on an image pickup means in a lateral-axis direction, and moving a scanning position sequentially in a longitudinal-axis direction at every end and measuring the quantity of bodies to be measured. CONSTITUTION:A scan driving circuit 3 makes a sequential scan on a light image from an object 1 which is picked up on the image pickup means 2 in the lateral-axis direction and moves the scanning position sequentially in the longitudinal-axis direction at every end of the lateral-axis scan to drive the means 2 so that a two-dimensional scan is made. A video signal from the means 2 is amplified and its waveform is analyzed by a measuring means 5, so that the signal is converted into a binary signal consisting of '1' for the presence of the object 1 and '0' for the absence. Then, positions on an X axis until a rise from a reference point provided on the X axis to '1' and positions on the X axis until a fall to '0' are counted. Contiguous scan data by the image pickup device 2 as to positions of '1' or '0' of the binary-coded signal from a measuring means 5 are compared and decided by a deciding means 6. The result is displayed on a display means 7 and sent out by an external output means 9.
