PURPOSE:To maintain uniform temp. distribution of a strip in the transverse direction thereof by providing an auxiliary roll having a function to adjust the tension and temp. distribution to the inlet side of a cooling section of a continuous annealing installation for cooling the strip by means of plural pieces of the cooling rolls disposed to the cooling section. CONSTITUTION:The strip 1 is fed from the inlet side to the cooling section 4 via a guide roll 5, an inlet side tension applying roll 2, the lower side of the auxiliary roll 11 and a guide roll 5a. The force F1 in an arrow direction is exerted to the shaft of the roll 11 by bending mechanisms 13, 13a to adjust the crown as shown by single dot chain line f1 so that the central part in the transverse direction is first cooled. While the tension is exerted to the strip 1, the force F2 in the direction opposite from the shaft of the roll 11 is exerted to the roll by the mechanisms 13, 13a to adjust the crown as shown by a single dot chain line f2 so that both ends in the transverse direction of the strip 1 are cooled.
