Compact balls of aluminium silicates are prepared by impinging a stream of the molten compound on a high velocity jet of gas, and solidifying the particles formed. The jet of gas may be of air or steam discharging from a nozzle in a substantially horizontal direction. The molten aluminium silicates may be made by melting a mixture of Al2O3 and quartz sand, a mixture of bauxite and quartz sand, or a mixture of Al2O3, bauxite and quartz sand. The melt is formed in a furnace which may have a tapping aperture and/or be capable of being tilted so that the molten material can be removed as a stream.
