PURPOSE:To stereoselectively and readily obtain a glycerol derivative, useful for producing optically active compounds, etc., having physiological activity and having epoxy ring, by reducing a novel ketodiol derivative corresponding to the aimed compound with a reducing agent. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I (R<1> is H or SiR<3>R<4>R<5>; R<2> is alkyl; R<3>-R<5> are alkyl) is reduced with 1-2mol, based on the above- mentioned compound, reducing agent, e.g. a hydride of boron, aluminum or silicon such as NaBH4, LiB(i-C4H9)3H, LiAlH4, AlH(i-C4H9)2, (C2H5)3SiH, phenylsilane, etc., normally in a solvent, e.g. methanol etc., preferably at -78 deg.C - room temperature, particularly <=0 deg.C for preferably 5min-1hr to freely afford the aimed stereoisomer of the compound expressed by formula I useful for the fields of agricultural chemicals, medicines and foods while optionally keeping the stereo structure of the compound expressed by formula I by suitable selecting the reducing agent. |
