PURPOSE:To perform a satisfactory reading from an end of an original even by indicating manually the original to a reading position directly by disposing a photodetecting sensor at a position symmetrical with respect to a perpendicular to an original surface of an illumination light source. CONSTITUTION:The photodetecting sensor 18 is provided in an opposite side to the light source 15 holding an optical system 17 therebetween. The original 11 is manually inserted between a roller 12 and an original pressing member 13. When the end of the original comes on the roller 12, light from the light source 15 is reflected on the surface of the original and made incident on the photodetecting sensor 18, so that, the reach of the original is detected and the reading of the original by a reading means 16 is immediately started by a controller not shown in a figure. When the back end of the original is separated from the roller 12, the quantity of light to the photodetecting sensor 18 is reduced, so that the back end is detected and the reading is completed simultaneously with the detection thereof.
