PURPOSE:To reduce the size of an image reader by arranging a light source inside the aperture angle of a lens and also providing a light shield member which prevents direct light from striking on the lens from the light source. CONSTITUTION:The light source 14 for lighting an original surface is provided nearby the light incidence end of a rod lens array 13 in the 1st case 11, i.e. inside the aperture angle of the rod lens array 13 and also in parallel to the array direction of the photoelectric converting elements of an image sensor 12. The light shield member 20 is provided so as to prevent the light from the light source 14 from striking directly on the rod lens array 13. The light shield member 20 is a thin and long plate formed in parallel to the array direction of the rod lens array 13 and fitted to the rod lens array 13 with screws at two positions on both sides.
