PURPOSE:To extract respective color data effectively and independently and to output and superpose colors included in respective color areas to express an intermediate color too by setting up respective color areas independently at the time of color separation based upon a processed result. CONSTITUTION:The reflected light of a color original is made incident upon an optical means and decomposed to red and cyanine components and respective components are converted into electric signals by photoelectric converting elements such as CCDs. These photoelectrically converted signals are normalized by reference color output values and the red photoelectric conversion signal VR and the cyanine photoelectric conversion signal VC are converted into digital data consisting of 6 bits by an A/D converter. Then, arithmetic processing of the digital data is executed. At the time of color separation based upon the arithmetically processed result, respective color areas are independently set up.
