In a device for motor vehicles or such like fitted with an anti- lock braking system (ABS), in which, in the case of braking by means of the driving brake and/or use of the engine braking torque in the ABS case, an automatic decoupling takes place by driving a multi-way magnetic valve acting on a cylinder/piston set by means of the ABS functions, and means are provided which allow takeover of the coupling function (coupling) in the event of a deliberate (manual) coupling operation by the operator, it is proposed that the piston/cylinder set, designed as a separate intermediate component in a first type of construction, be connected (no parallel bypass lines) to the coupling transmitter or receiver cylinder exclusively by hydraulic connecting lines, without any magnetic valves, and in this case, if necessary in the case of further types of construction, the cylinder/piston set be structurally combined with the coupling receiver cylinder or with the transmitter cylinder.
