PURPOSE:To make a gap length which is used for absorbing variation of rotation effective, by setting the gap length of a recording area existing on an optical disk in accordance with the rotation varying quantity at the time of writing and erasing. CONSTITUTION:The starting point of a sector is detected from data read from an optical disk 1 by a sector mark (SM) detecting circuit 2 and a timing pulse generating circuit 3 and microprocessor circuit 5 are actuated by the output of the detecting circuit 2. At the time of a normal write instruction, a write controlling circuit 4 writes user data 6 from a host device 7 on the optical disk 1 by means of a write instruction line 11 from the microprocessor circuit 5 and, when an erase instruction is issued, performs erasing operations to the optical disk 1. At the time of erasing operations, a timing pulse generating circuit 3 controls the operating time of the write controlling circuit 4 at the time of writing/erasing and causes the circuit 4 to operate longer than the operating time at the time of writing when data are erased.
