A device for separating a payload from a cargo parachute comprises a coupling which is arranged between the payload and the parachute belt train and which opens automatically when the payload is placed down on the ground. The release process is produced by the inertia force of an acceleration body which becomes effective as a result of the deceleration occurring on impact and which acts against the restoring force of a retaining spring. Locking is effected via at least one locking element which is constructed as a two-armed lever, one of whose arms is used as hook for a belt ring of the cargo parachute and the other arm of which can be acted on, in the opening direction of the hook, by the acceleration body, which is displaceable with respect to the other arm.
