The apparatus comprises at least one ground-engaging drum (10) including a hollow cylinder (12) mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis, a plurality of apertures (17) distributed around the circumference of the cylinder (12), and a layer (18) of open cell resilient material covering the outer surface of the cylinder (12). Valves (26) in the drum are arranged to close the aperture (17) except under the inward pressure of water passing thorough the resilient layer (18) when the latter is compressed, and a plurality of troughs (30) are provided on the inner surface of the cylinder (12) for carrying water which enters the apertures (17) in the area of ground contact upwardly away from the ground by rotation of the cylinder (12). A non-rating water tank (35) mounted within the cylinder (12) collects the water discharged from the troughs (30) when each reaches a certain height. In a futher embodiment the layer (18) includes funnel-shaped apertures (50) which communicate directly with respective apertures (17) in the cylinder (12), and the outer surface of the layer (18) is covered with a non-porous rubber sheet (60) except at the entrance (62) to the apertures (50) in the layer (18). In this case the resilient layer (18) may not be open cell structure. |
