PURPOSE:To improve the magnetic characteristics such as coercive force Hc, squareness ratio Rs, and S*, to increase reproduction output, and to improve recording density by incorporating Si into a Cr layer to make the crystal grains in a substrate film and a magnetic film extremely fine in the magnetic recording medium wherein the Cr layer is formed as the substrate film of the magnetic film. CONSTITUTION:Si is incorporated into the Cr layer in the magnetic recording medium wherein the Cr layer is formed as the substrate film of the magnetic film. The amt. of Si to be added into the Cr substrate film is preferably adjusted to about 1-9wt%. Namely, when the amt. of Si is excessively small, the improvement of the magnetic characteristics such as coercive force Hc, squareness ratio Rs, and S* by the addition of Si is correspondingly reduced. Conversely, when the amt. of Si is excessively large, the magnetic characteristics such as coercive force Hc is deteriorated. Besides, the thickness of the Cr substrate layer contg. Si is preferably controlled to about 500-10,000Angstrom , and the thickness of the metallic magnetic film is preferably controlled to about 200-2,000Angstrom .
