The mechanical stability of coprecipitated nickel-alumina catalysts used for methantion reactions, is improved by incorporating a silicon compound into the precursor prior to calcination of the precipitated form. Silicon, preferably in amounts of from 5 to 10% by weight, expressed at SiO2, may be incorporated at the precipitation stage employing, for example, an alkali metal silicate or added to the precipitated form using, for example, colloidal silica. |
