A pressurized water reactor system (10) has a hydraulic rod drive arrangement which includes a vent system for selectively operating rod clusters (34) between the fully withdrawn and fully inserted positions, (132) respectively connected to said plurality of rod clusters (34) and movable axially therewith through a path of travel corresponding to the movement of the respective rod clusters (34) between the fully within (positions 3-4) with a reservoir (93) maintained at substantially atmospheric pressure; and control valves selectively operable for connecting outlet channels (140) of selected drive means (66) to the reservoir (93) to establish a pressure differential therewithin for operating the rods.
