PURPOSE:To obtain the titled colorless and odorless substance, useful as an emulsifying agent, solubilizing agent, dispersing agent, etc., and having stability, by adding an alkylene oxide to a partial ester of a polyhydric alochol with oleic acid produced by a specific method. CONSTITUTION:A fatty acid mixture containing oleic acid, e.g. olive oil or beef tallow, and urea are dissolved in an organic solvent and cooled to deposit crystals, which are then separated and removed. The fatty acid mixture contained in the organic solvent solution is then partially saponified with a basic compound, ammonia, etc., and recrystallized to separate an acid salt of the oleic acid as crystals. An acid is then added to carry out acid decomposition and afford high-purity oleic acid. A partial ester is produced from the above-mentioned oleic acid and polyhydric alcohol and a 2-18C alkylene oxide is added thereto in the presence of, e.g. a Lewis acid based catalyst, at 0-70 deg.C under <=10kg/cm<2>G pressure to afford the titled substance.
