PURPOSE:The reaction of a fluorinated aliphatic dihalide with carbon dioxide in the presence of zinc in an organic solvent is followed by the hydrolysis of the product, as the concentration of the carbon dioxide is kept at a specific level in the solvent, to give the objective compound efficiently. CONSTITUTION:When the title compound is produced by reaction of a compound of the formula: X-Rf-X' (Rf is 3-20C saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched-chain difunction fluorinated aliphatic group; X, X' are Cl, Br or I) with carbon dioxide in an organic solvent preferably aprotic polar solvent, in the presence of zinc, preferably 2-10 moles, per mole of the starting sub stance, of activated zinc dust, preferably at 0-100 deg.C, the concentration of carbon dioxide is adjusted to more than 0.3 mol/l, preferably 0.3-5 moles/l in the solvent. Thus, the objective substance which is used in fluorine-containing polyes ter, polyamide and other polycondensation products is obtained almost quantita tively through simple operations with industrial advantage.
