Prepn. of carboxylic acid (I) and unsatd. esters of carboxylic acids (II) (where I may = II), by reacting an alkylenically unsatd. cpd. (III) with oxygen and the carboxylic acid (II) in the gas phase at elevated temps. in the pres. of an aldehyde corresponding to the acid (I) in structure and number of carbon atoms, using a Pd cpd. on a carrier as catalyst.
