PURPOSE:To detect an inclination state in a stepless manner with good accuracy, by simple constitution such that the inclination state of a vehicle is detected using a mercury utilizing type switch. CONSTITUTION:A mercury filled container 2 is mounted to a vehicle at the predetermined position thereof and the upper internal part thereof is filled with mercury 4 in an amount almost equal to the half volume in the container 1 so as to leave a predetermined space 3. A pair of resistor electrodes (a), (b) are parallelly formed to the inner wall shown by an A-surface of the container 2 by printing so as to be spaced apart to each other over the range from the almost upper part of the container to the lower end thereof and further connected to a detection circuit 7 from the upper end of the container 2 through lead wires 5, 6. By this constitution, the container 2 is inclined when the vehicle is stopped on the surface of an ascent road and, therefore, the length (l) of each of the electrodes (a), (b) exposed above mercury changes to (l') and the electric resistance thereof also changes corresponding thereto and this change is detected by the detection circuit 7.
