1,144,502. Grippers for lifting stacks of bricks and other articles. A. T. VAN HUET. 5 May, 1966 [6 May, 1965] No. 19861/66. Heading B8H. The bottom layer of a single row of stacked bricks is gripped at each side by one of a pair of self-aligning thrust pads 6 actuated by an hydraulic cylinder 9 whereby to clamp the bottom layer and support the bricks stacked thereon before the stack is lifted. The thrust pads 6 are interconnected by an endless chain 24 to ensure symmetrical gripping and are each attached to a slider 7 mounted on the ends of the piston rods 8 of the hydraulic cylinder 9 mounted on the lower girder 10 of the gripper framework. Side frames 35 are mounted on the thrust pads 6 to move therewith and each has an upper arm 36 hooked over the upper girder 37 of the gripper to prevent rotation of the thrust pads in the forward direction. The hydraulic cylinder 9 is controlled by a control rod 16 rotatable to actuate switch 14 to start a motor 12 driving a pump 13 and to control a control valve 19 to regulate the flow of fluid to the hydraulic cylinder, the motor, pump, control valve, &c. all being mounted on the gripper framework. The gripper is lifted by means not shown attached to a pulley 2 in turn mounted on a block 3. The block mounts a roller 4 for movement in an upwardly inclined trackway 5 whereby the gripper will assume a backward inclination when lifted. The extent of the travel of the roller is governed by an adjustable screw 38. The block 3 also mounts a chain 27 attached at the other end to the gripper framework and running around a sprocket 28. The sprocket spindle 30 has attached at each end thereof a spring 31 attached at their other end to the gripper framework to maintain the same in an upright condition when unloaded. The spindle 30 also carries a wedge shaped plate 33 to engage a plate 34, attached to the control rod 16, when the gripper is lifted and prevent rotation of the rod, and hence actuation of the thrust pads. |
