Halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons prepared by halogenation or halogenating pyrolysis of aliphatic hydrocarbon are purified by heating to a temperature between 100 DEG and 160 DEG C., under a pressure not lower than atmospheric prior to the removal of the acidic substances contained therein. The impurities which are neutral oxygen containing are converted by the process to acidic substances which are then removed by washing with water, an aqueous alkaline solution or an aqueous alkaline dispersion followed, if necessary, by a fractionation stage. Examples describe the treatment of carbon tetrachloride and tetrachloroethylene.
